Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,
I am excited to share a few highlights with you this week. A&S has been a primary host and sponsor of the 2026 UW Humanities Summit being held this week. I was honored to give opening remarks yesterday and was pleased to see such a terrific turnout of guests, faculty, and students. This is the second Humanities Summit, and it is offering us a wonderful opportunity to engage with colleagues, share ideas, and celebrate the vibrancy of our humanities disciplines. I encourage everyone to attend today’s events and especially the closing lecture by Edward Larson, “Declaring Independence: Why 1776 Matters,” that is today at 4 pm in the A&S Auditorium. I want to thank Joy Landeira, Jean Garrison, and EVERYONE who organized and supported this important A&S led effort.
On Monday, a group of A&S faculty and leaders met with dignitaries from Freie University of Berlin at President Seidel’s house. There was excellent discussion about future partnerships with this institution through faculty collaboration, study abroad, and student exchanges. There are many exciting possibilities. If you are interested and have ideas for this collaboration, please reach out to your department head and/or the Dean’s Office.
Additionally, yesterday the UW Foundation hosted an “Endowing Excellence” luncheon that was a special occasion to recognize and thank our generous donors as well as celebrate the faculty who hold endowed positions. Their dedication and achievements exemplify the excellence we strive for across the college, and I am grateful for their ongoing contributions. A&S has many endowed positions, and it was great to mingle with our faculty, supporters, and donors.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the spring weather.
Sincerely,
J. Scott Turpen
