Circotettix rabula, the wrangler grasshopper, can be found on bare or eroded soil throughout the state. It ranges to higher elevations than C. carlinianus and is common on exposed road banks in areas of ponderosa pine. Eggs overwinter in the soil and hatch in late spring. Adults are present from late July to September. It is a mixed feeder preferring forbs such as locoweed, vetch, and sandwort. Its weed feeding may have a limited beneficial effect on rangelands.
