Snakeweed Grasshopper
Hesperotettix viridis (Thomas)
Hesperotettix viridis, the snakeweed grasshopper, is found in Wyoming associated with its food plants.
The wing length of this small green grasshopper is variable. The longest winged form
occurs in the southeast. A very short-winged form occurs in Sweetwater County. In
most of the north and central parts of Wyoming the wings are of intermediate in length.
Eggs overwinter in the soil. Adults are present in July, August, and September. In
Wyoming this species feeds on snakeweed, rabbitbrush, and a few other forbs and is
considered beneficial.
