Melanoplus gladstoni Scudder
Melanoplus gladstoni is underreported in this survey because it appears as adults late in the summer.
This grasshopper is common throughout the shortgrass and mixedgrass prairies of eastern
Wyoming. Eggs overwinter in the soil and hatch in late June. Adults are present from
late August to October. It feeds primarily on forbs but will feed on some grass. Benefits
to rangelands are possible given its preference for forbs but its exact economic impact
is not known in Wyoming.
