Packard Grasshopper
Melanoplus packardii Scudder
Melanoplus packardii, the Packard grasshopper, is most common in field margins and roadsides but also
occurs on undisturbed prairies. In recent years it has been particularly abundant
on CRP lands. Eggs overwinter in the soil and hatch in June. Adults are present from
late July to early September. This species is primarily a forb feeder and prefers
many species of legumes. It rarely damages rangeland vegetation. It is more often
a pest of alfalfa and crop field margins.
