International Education Week Virtual Events Set at UW Nov. 16

International Education Week will be celebrated at ĂÛŃżTV Nov. 16-20 with virtual programs and panel discussions, international food nights, games, workshops and a photo contest.

The events are sponsored by UW’s Global Engagement Office, which includes the Center for Global Studies, Education Abroad, English Language Center, and International Students and Scholars (ISS).

“We consider the contributions of international students, scholars and researchers to U.S. universities -- and the ability of U.S. students to participate in study and internship programs abroad -- an invaluable part of higher education,” says Shelley Jewell, UW Education Abroad director.

Among the ongoing events is voting for the Global Engagement Office’s annual photo contest, which is now open. Go to www.uwyo.edu/uwyoabroad to vote for the people’s choice winner. Students have submitted photos in the following categories: Cowboys Abroad, Live Like a Local, Postcard Perfect and Fantastic Food. The international photo contest winners will be announced via Zoom Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m.

Activities scheduled for the week are:

-- All week: “Spice World” with the Albany County Public Library (ACPL) -- cooking kesari, a dish from India. Free spice packets are available at the ACPL. A cooking video will be posted on ACPL and ISS Facebook pages.

-- Monday, Nov. 16, 10-11 a.m.: “The Sons of Shem and Japheth Walk into Buckhorn Bar . What can they talk about?” The program features Moshe Pinchuk, from Netanya Academic College in Israel, in a conversation with Seth Ward, a UW senior lecturer of philosophy and religious studies.

4-5 p.m.: “The Challenges of International Higher Ed in a Post-COVID World.” The discussion features Federiga Bindi, from Tor Vergata University of Rome, with Stephanie Anderson, a professor and department head of the UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies.

All evening: “Washakie International Food Night,” Washakie Dining Center.

-- Tuesday, Nov. 17, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: “UWYO Partner Presentations.” Partners of Education Abroad will discuss academics, housing and life at their respective institutions. Scheduled: 10-10:30 a.m., University of Glasgow in Scotland; 11-11:30 a.m., University of Haifa International School in Israel; and noon-12:30 p.m., University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

1-2 p.m.: “UWYO Abroad Alumni Panel and Q&A.” UWYO Abroad Ambassadors will share their study-abroad experiences and answer questions.

4-5 p.m.: “Peace Corps Prep Program Info Session.” Representatives from UW’s Advising, Career and Exploratory Studies Center and Education Abroad will discuss the new Peace Corps Prep program.

5 p.m.: Education Abroad photo contest winners will be announced.

-- Wednesday, Nov. 18, 10-11 a.m.: “Self-Enrichment: World Languages and Cultures Program Highlights.” Dilnoza Khasilova, project coordinator in UW’s English Language Center, will discuss updates from the World Languages and Culture Program.

Noon-1 p.m.: “International Graduate Students: ‘What’s Next?’” The discussion will focus on the future for international graduate students.

3-4 p.m.: “English as a Second Language Game Hour.” Various games are planned.

-- Thursday, Nov. 19, all day: “EducationUSA Malaysia Social Media Takeovers” by UW Malaysian students and alumni. Follow EducationUSA Malaysia on Facebook or Instagram.

11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m.: “Careers Panel Discussion with Shawn Bunning and UW Graduates.” The panel discussion will focus on international career opportunities.

Noon-1 p.m.: “English Language Center Teaching English Overseas Career Workshop.” The discussion will focus on teaching English overseas.

3-4 p.m: “World Affairs and the Necessity of International Public Service.” A conversation with Ambassador Richard Holwill will be facilitated by Anderson and Jean Garrison, a professor in the UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies.

6:30-7:30 p.m.: “Know Your Rights.” A panel discussion featuring the UW Police Department, Lauren McLane, a UW assistant professor of law, and Diane Lozano, the state public defender, is scheduled.

-- Friday, Nov. 20, all day: “EducationUSA Malaysia Social Media Takeovers” by UW Malaysian students and alumni. Follow EducationUSA Malaysia on Facebook or Instagram.

3-4:30 p.m.: “Post-election Immigration Landscape,” panel discussion.
