Finned Grasshopper
Trachyrhachys aspera Scudder
Trachyrhachys aspera, the finned grasshopper, is common on rangelands of extreme southeast Wyoming in
early fall. It prefers disturbed sites in the shortgrass prairie. Eggs overwinter
in the soil. Nymphs become adults in early September and can still be found on warm
days in early November. Its feeding habits are not well known but it will feed on
blue grama and sand dropseed. Because it occurs so late in the season, it is not known
to cause economic damage to the rangelands.
