Kiowa Grasshopper
Trachyrhachys kiowa (Thomas)
Trachyrhachys kiowa, the Kiowa grasshopper, is a very common grasshopper throughout the rangelands of Wyoming.
It becomes most abundant in the shortgrss prairies and least abundant in the desert
southwest. Eggs overwinter in the soil and hatch in June. Adults are common from mid
July to September. It feeds on grasses and has a distinct preference for blue grama
where available. At times large populations will damage rangeland forage, usually
in conjunction with other species.
