The Office of General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to University of Wyoming faculty and staff regarding intellectual property matters, particularly as related to copyrights. General Counsel attorneys works closely with other University of Wyoming units charged with filing, protecting and commercializing patents, licensing, commercialization, and research-related matters, as well as trademark licensing.

Copyrights

Faculty, staff, and students retain ownership in their copyrightable works. Ownership of copyrighted materials created by University of Wyoming faculty, staff, and students is governed by UW Regulation 9‑1 (University Intellectual Property). This regulation establishes the University’s rights and responsibilities regarding copyrightable works, including determining when the University has an ownership interest and how such works may be used or disseminated. Patents

Under UW Regulation 9‑1 (University Intellectual Property), ÃÛÑ¿TV oversees the development, protection, and management of patentable inventions created by UW faculty, staff, and students. TRADEMARKS

 

The University of Wyoming and the State of Wyoming collaborate to manage trademarks, including the iconic Bucking Horse
& Rider, through a consolidated licensing program managed by the UW (TLO). This partnership
ensures the protection, promotion, and proper commercial use of trademarks, with royalties often supporting various
university projects and activities. The university receives royalty payments for the use of any Trademarks, and all vendors and
organizations looking to use the Trademarks must hold a licensing agreement with the TLO.  Licensing provides an efficient
and feasible means to ensure that the trademark is protected from misuse or infringement, and that ownership is rightfully
retained by Wyoming, for the people of Wyoming. 

 

Under the University of Wyoming’s Trademark Licensing SAP 3.2-1, the University is responsible for developing, adopting,
